Starting in November of 2020, I released 30 YouTube videos in 30 days. The audio recordings were made earlier that year in the days leading up to a surgical procedure I was scheduled for. In the weeks before my surgery, I was told that there was a possibility that the procedure could cause nerve damage in my right arm and hand. I thought about that a lot…if things went wrong, there was a chance that I might not be able to play the piano, write, arrange, and conduct music.
So, in an effort to accomplish something that should have been done long before, I scheduled two recording sessions and started to prepare. I chose sacred hymn arrangements that had appeared in various publications from 2004 - 2020, but that I had never personally recorded or shared with anyone. The day before the first session, I wrote in my journal, “These recordings could very possibly be my ‘farewell to the piano.’ I’m prepared for that and at peace with it. I trust the Lord and that He will take care of me and do what’s best for me.”
The recording sessions went well—I was able to work with my dear friends Guy Randle (recording engineer), Daron Bradford (woodwinds), and Nicole Pinnell (cello).
And I’m grateful to report that the surgery was a success—with no complications or aftereffects (I attribute that to an excellent surgeon, to the prayers, fasting, and faith of family and friends, and—most of all—to a loving and merciful God). I’m so thankful that I’m still able to do the things that I love!
And now (as of September 2021), after encouragement from friends and family, many of the "30 Days" songs have been compiled into two digital-only album collections:
